Self-criticism by the Original 9/11 Commission

What’s wrong, you ask, with the original 9/11 Commission and it’s 2004 report to Congress and the American people?

Well, the 9/11 Commission’s co-chairs have publicly stated some surprising things: For starters, the 9/11 Commissioners knew that some military officials misrepresented the facts to the Commission, and further, the Commission considered recommending criminal charges for these false statements.

Other public statements by the original commissioners include the following:

“I don’t believe for a minute we got everything right . . . the Commission was set up to fail
. . . people should keep asking questions about 9/11 . . . the 9/11 debate should continue. “
—9/11 Commission Co-chairs Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton

“We were extremely frustrated with the false statements we were getting.”
—9/11 Commissioner Timothy Roemer

“There are ample reasons to suspect that there may be some alternative to what we outlined in our version . . . We didn’t have access . . . “
—9/11 Commissioner Bob Kerrey

“It is a national scandal . . . this investigation is now compromised . . . this White House wants to cover it up.”
—9/11 Commissioner Max Cleland, upon resigning from the Commission

“At some level of the government, at some point in time . . . there was an agreement not to tell the truth about what happened . . . I was shocked at how different the truth was from the way it was described . . . The tapes told a radically different story from what had been told to us and the public for two years. . . It’s almost a culture of concealment, for lack of a better word. There were interviews made at the FAA’s New York center the night of 9/11 and those tapes were destroyed. The CIA tapes of the interrogations were destroyed. The story of 9/11 itself, to put it mildly, was distorted and was completely different from the way things happened.”
—John Farmer, Senior Counsel to the 9/11 Commission

Nothing is more important to the future of our country than uncovering the truth about 9/11. We mustn’t allow blatant untruths, the government’s version of the attacks, to perpetuate our transformation into a permanent war culture that tortures, spies, and kills at will. As a career teacher, I urge other instructors and professors to encourage the study of 9/11. No other subject can with equal force awaken citizens to our dangerous vulnerability to propaganda. The Toronto International Inquiry into 9/11deserves our attention and support. This is our chance to make things right. After JFK’s murder we were asked to believe in a “magic bullet.” Now, even more preposterously, we’re asked to believe in “magic buildings”–that THREE WTC skyscrapers could do what no other buildings (without explosives) have done. Nearly bankrupt, financially and morally, our country desperately needs the truth about 9/11.
